Crocodiles have been presented in Myanmar for a long
time. Four species of Crocodile, the Gavialis gangeticus, Crocodylus
palustris, C. siamensisand Tomista schlegelii may have at one
time been prevalent in Myanmar water, the only Crocodile species present
in Myanmar today is the saltwater or estuarine dwelling Crocodylus
porosus.
In the mangrove forests of the coastal areas of the
Myanmar estuarine crocodiles were found in great numbers in the past. But
the estuarine crocodile population is confined to only one region, namely
Ayeyarwaddy Delta (Mainmahla
Kyun (Island) Wildlife Sanctuary and surrounding areas) in recent
year. The estimated population is less than 100 in Mainmahla Kyun Wildlife
Sanctuary and surrounding areas.
