During January 2008 critical endangered Spoon-billed Sandpiper was rediscovered after a gap of almost 131 years in Myanmar.
The Spoon-billed Sandpiper recover team has the members of Myanmar Bird and Nature Society, Biodiversity and Nature Conservation Association, Russian Bird Conservation Union, ArcCona Consulting (Cambridge, UK and Kiel, Germany), Japan Wetland Action Network and Bird Conservation Society of Thailand. The team surveyed wintering Spoon-billed Sandpiper at two sites in Coastal Myanmar namely Rakhine (formerly Arakan) Cost and Gulf of Mottama (formerly Martaban).
A total of 84 Spoon-billed Sandpiper were counted during the survey. Thirty-five Spoon-billed Sandpipers were counted at one high-tide roost in Rakhine. The team at Motama found a total of 48 Spoon-billed Sandpipers, scattered over the huge mudflats of the bay but included a flock of 39 individuals of Spoon-billed Sandpiper.
